Monotype

Monotype is a process of fine art invented in the 17th century.
Instead of drawing on paper or canvas, it is drawn or painted on glass, acrylic or metal plates and, as long as the ink is still moist, printed on the paper by means of a press or hand rubbing. If this happens with a printing press, the trigger has a plate edge like a gravure.
The image design is carried out as a printing process either by selective application of the color or by selective on or by pressing the print material such as a thin paper. The motif is painted with wet paint on metal, the trigger made while the paint is still wet.
An alternative monotype technique works as follows: A very thin paper is laid on a glass, acrylic or metal plate which has been rolled evenly with a printing ink (for example linoleum or oil paint). The motif is drawn on the upper (actually back) side of the paper.
It can be pre-marked on the rolled plate before being placed on it. Soft drawing devices, e.g. Graphite crayons create a soft velvety line, hard, such as a ballpoint pen, a correspondingly clear line on the bottom. Halftones are created by rubbing with the thumb or palm, or by using colored surfaces with different levels of color fats. When using oil paints, shades are also possible by dabbing with a cloth or thinning the paint with turpentine, and when printing / hand rubbing on tissue paper and similar material, the prints appear similar to lithography.
Multi-colored monotypes are obtained by new or additionally with additional colors rolled glass plates.
The monotype ("a single image") is thus clearly an original and can not be attributed to conventional printmaking, since the main feature of the printmaking, the production of any number of (almost) identical images is not given.
It is not the printing form that determines the picture, but the way in which the paint is applied to and removed from a flat surface. The connection to the printmaking can be seen in the fact that the image surface is not processed directly, but indirectly.
The monotype is therefore a combination of painting, drawing and graphics.
